Pierre-Eugène Vibert (born February 16, 1875 in Carouge , † January 1, 1937 there ) was a Swiss wood cutter , illustrator and painter .

Life

Pierre-Eugène Vibert, a brother of the sculptor James Vibert , studied at the cantonal arts school in Geneva (École cantonale des Arts industriels), where he learned drawing from the painters Barthélemy Menn and Pierre Pignolat and, above all, the art of wood engraving from Alfred Martin . In 1892 he left Switzerland with his brother James and moved to Paris . There the brothers made friends with the poets Remy de Gourmont and Paul Fort and belonged to the circle of symbolists who met in the Café Procope . To earn a living he worked as a reproduction artist. From 1898 he showed his works in the salon of the Société nationale des beaux-arts . At the World Exhibition in Paris in 1900 he was awarded a silver medal. In 1903 he was one of the co-founders of the Paris Société du Salon d'Automne together with his brother James . He lived partly in Paris, partly in Geneva, in 1910 he moved to Grosrouvre in the Yvelines department near Paris, where he had his studio. After the outbreak of World War I , Vibert returned to Carouge with his family. From 1920 he taught drawing and woodcut at the École des Beaux-Arts de Genève, from 1923 he again divided his time between Carouge and Grosrouvre. After the Bloody Night in Geneva on November 9, 1932, he decided to join the socialist movement and in 1935 became a councilor in Carouge. At the same time he began to teach wood engraving at the Ecole des arts industriels in Geneva in 1934. Until his sudden death in 1937 he exhibited his works regularly.

Vibert is especially important as a wood cutter. Around 1898 he began to use the monochrome Camaieu technique. From 1898 to 1932 he illustrated dozens of books. He also edited three cycles of woodcuts: Paris Surroundings (1916), Landscapes by Yveline (1919) and Harmonies (1921). In 1915 he created a portrait sketch by Carl Spitteler .
