Pierre-Joseph Alary (born March 19, 1689 in Paris , † December 15, 1770 ) was a French clergyman, philosopher and man of letters.

Live and act

Pierre-Joseph Alary was the son of the pharmacist Barthélémy Alary, ( maistre apoticaire ) from Grasse in Provence , before he settled in Paris near the Pont Saint-Michel .

Louis Du Four de Longuerue , also called Abbé de Longuerue (1652–1733), promoted and taught Pierre-Joseph Alary in his youth. Although a committed pupil and student, he was accused of participating in the Conspiration de Cellamare . Philippe II. De Bourbon, duc d'Orléans , however, allowed him to defend himself against the allegations.

He later became prior of Gournay-sur-Marne and sous-précepteur of Louis XV. , a (sub) nobility educator or court master of the king. He was sponsored in this position by André-Hercule de Fleury . Alary frequented Madame de Lambert's drawing room .

On September 30, 1723 he was elected to the Académie française , whose chairmanship he took over from Jean-Antoine de Mesmes (1661-1723).

In 1724 Abbé Alary founded the Club de l'Entresol together with Charles Irénée Castel de Saint-Pierre , a discussion group based on the English model, which met until 1731. Every Saturday up to twenty participants were able to freely discuss political, philosophical and economic issues.
