Pierre-François-Joseph Bosquet (born November 8, 1810 in Mont-de-Marsan , Landes , † February 5, 1861 in Pau ) was a Marshal of France and fought in Algeria and in the Crimean War .

Life

Bosquet was trained at the École polytechnique in Paris and at the application school in Metz . He joined the army in Algeria in 1834 as a sub-lieutenant . In 1847 he became a colonel in a line infantry regiment . In 1848 he was given command of the Orléansville Subdivision and in August of that year he was appointed Brigadier General. As such, he opened the campaign against the Kabyle in 1851 with the storming of the pass over the Menegal .

Promoted to division general in August 1853, he was given command of the 2nd  Infantry Division of the Orient Army at the outbreak of the Crimean War . In the Battle of the Alma , he decided victory by climbing the heights on their left flank, considered inaccessible by the Russians . As the commander of an observation corps that had to fend off a relief attack on the besiegers off Sevastopol , he made a significant contribution to the results of the Battle of Balaklava and the Battle of Inkerman , where the British, who were besieged by the overwhelming odds , were saved by his timely appearance.

Entrusted to the command of the 2nd Corps of the Orient Army on January 10, 1855, he took the Russian counter trenches that threatened the French siege work on the night of February 23rd to 24th, played a key role in storming the Green Mamelon ( Mamelon vert ) and led the attack on the right flank against the Malakov sector during the great Allied assault on Sevastopol (September 8) . However, he received a severe wound in his hip from a bomb fragment, so that he had to return to France immediately.

Upon his return home, Bosquet was appointed Senator in February 1856 and Marshal of France on March 18, 1856, and in 1858 he was given high command in Toulouse . But after a long illness he died on February 5, 1861.
