Pierre Auguste Gratien Pican SDB (born February 27, 1935 in Granville , Département Manche ; † July 23, 2018 ) was a French religious priest and Roman Catholic bishop .

Life

Pierre Pican joined the order of the Salesians of Don Bosco . After the novitiate in Dormans , he made his first profession on September 4, 1955. On April 24, 1966, after completing his philosophical and theological training, he was ordained a priest . He first worked for two years at the Caen high school , then went to Lebanon in 1968 to run a French-Lebanese school. He was also parish vicar in Beirut . In 1971 he returned to France. There he was responsible for the technical high school at the Lemonnier Institute. From 1975 to 1981 he was Provincial of the French Province of the Salesians of Don Bosco. He then became director of the Lemonnier Institute.

On March 10, 1988, he was appointed coadjutor of the Bishop of Bayeux and Lisieux by Pope John Paul II . The episcopal ordination took place on April 17, 1988 in the Cathedral of Bayeux by Bishop of Bayeux Jean Badré . On November 21 of the same year he succeeded the local bishop in office.

In September 2001 he was sentenced to three months probation for failure to report the case of child sexual abuse by the diocesan priest René Bissey . He declared during the trial that he would do the same again today. This was the first time in Europe that a bishop had been convicted. In April 2010, a letter dated September 2001 came out in which the Prefect of the Congregation for the Clergy , Cardinal Darío Castrillón Hoyos , thanked Pican for having “preferred prison to betrayal of a brother priest”. Vatican spokesman Lombardi distanced himself from the content of this letter and blamed disagreements within the Congregation for the Clergy and between the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith and the Congregation for it. Before 2001, the reported cases had been forwarded to the Congregation for the Clergy, where some of those responsible took the view that they should only be tried according to canon law. This grievance has now been remedied by pooling the cases with the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith .

On March 12, 2010, Pope Benedict XVI. his / her resignation request submitted for reasons of age upon completion of the seventy-fifth year of life.
