life and work

Youth in Algeria

Pierre Rabhi was born in Kenadsa in southern Algeria in 1938. His mother died when he was four years old. His father, a blacksmith, musician and poet, sent him to French and Islamic schools and entrusted his son to a French couple, an engineer and a teacher, who worked in the village. Thus, Pierre Rabhi grew up with both a European-Catholic and an Islamic culture: at the age of 16, to the annoyance of his father, he decided to convert to Christianity .

When the Algerian War broke out in 1954, he found himself in a delicate situation: his father no longer accepted him and his “ adoptive father ” had thrown him out of the house because of a conflict - he moved to Paris.

In France

In France he works in a factory where he met his future wife Michèle. Neither of them wanted to live in the city forever and saw their future in agriculture. The meeting with Pierre Richard , doctor and visionary ecologist , who at that time was working on the creation of a national park in the Cevennes , motivated them to realize their project: They moved to the Ardèche department and finally settled there in 1960. Pierre Rabhi turned to a Maison familiale rurale and completed a diploma course in agriculture. After three years as a farm worker, he went into business for himself to do biodynamic agriculture .

Work in developing countries and with international organizations

In 1978 he became responsible for the " Agroecology " course at CEFRA ( Center d'études et de formation rurales appliquées , Center for Studies and Applied Rural Education ) . In 1981 he traveled to Africa at the request of the African state of Burkina Faso and supported by the CRIAD ( Center de relations internationales entre agriculteurs pour le développement , Center for international relations between farmers for development ), where he was involved in the “Farmer Without Borders” campaign; In 1985, with the help of the Le Point Mulhouse association, he set up a training facility for agroecology in Gorom-Gorom .

In 1988 he founded the CIEPAD ( Carrefour international d'échanges de pratiques appliquées au développement , Center for International Applied Development Practices ). He carried out various projects such as training courses and awareness campaigns and organized development projects in Morocco , Palestine , Algeria , Tunisia , Senegal , Togo , Benin , Mauritania , Poland and the Ukraine .

Since 1994 he has campaigned for the Oasis en tous lieux movement , for a return to the “mother earth” and for the organizations of a social network. In 1997 and 1998 he intervened at the request of the UN in connection with its Convention to Combat Desertification and was asked to make specific proposals.

In 1999 and 2001 new development projects were launched in Niger ( Agadez region ) and Mali ( Gao region ). In 2003 he founded the agro-ecological association Les Amanins with Michel Valentin , which is actively committed to ecological agriculture , education and the construction sector. The question "What kind of planet will we leave behind for our children, which children will we leave behind the planet?" Is the guiding principle of the association.

Pierre Rabhi regularly organizes conferences and workshops on the subjects of stunting and “ simple living ”. He was invited to speak by the European Social Forum . In 2007 he founded the "Movement for the Earth and Humanism" ( Mouvemenent pour la Terre et l'Humanisme , also "Colibris").
