Pierre Roy (painter)

Pierre Roy (born August 10, 1880 in Nantes , Loire-Atlantique department , † September 26, 1950 in Milan ) was a French painter.

Life

Pierre Roy came to Paris in 1904 and attended both the Académie Julian and the École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts . Among his friends he counted Apollinaire and Max Jacob . In the early days of his artistic activity, Pierre Roy initially turned to Fauvism . Then around 1920 he joined the Surrealists . Many of his most famous paintings date from this period.

In 1928 he found his own style and found inspiration while traveling to America in 1930 and Hawaii (1935). Since then, Pierre Roy has been regarded as the oldest representative of magical realism or super realism . In the United States, where he has had numerous exhibitions, some of his graphics appear on the covers of fashion and art magazines.
