Pierre Vernier (mathematician)
Pierre Vernier (born August 19, 1580 in Ornans in Franche-Comté ; † September 14, 1637 ibid) was a French mathematician, mint director of Burgundy , commander of the Ornans castle and councilor to the King of Spain .
Vernier mainly worked as a fortification engineer. In 1631 he published a work in Brussels in which he presented his invention of the Vernier scale, called Nonius in German ; with their help, length and angle measurements could be carried out more precisely than before.
