Pierre de Belleperche , also Latinized as Petrus de Bellapertica (* around 1250 in Lucenay as Pierre de Breschard de Villars , † January 17, 1308 in Paris ) was a French clergyman, legal scholar, Bishop of Auxerre and Chancellor of France .

life and work

Belleperche studied between 1270 and 1280 with the canon Raoul d'Harcourt in Orléans . After graduating, Belleperche worked as a law teacher in Orléans for around 15 years. Around 1296 he resigned his teaching post to become clericus regis of King Philip the Fair of France . He was then a member of the French Parliament . On behalf of the king and in the service of the French administration, Belleperche made numerous trips during these years, including to the Auvergne , the Vermandois , Lyon , Lausanne and Arras . From 1299 he was Canon of Bourges , as the French King's envoy to the Pope, he was Canon of Chartres from 1303 . From 1305 he was cathedral dean of Paris. From 1306 until his death Belleperche was Bishop of Auxerre , from 1306 to 1307 also Chancellor of France .

Belleperche is one of the most important French commentators alongside Jacques de Révigny . Belleperche attached great importance to penetrating the spirit of Roman law and interpreting the sources in this sense. He expressed this request in his numerous writings such as his Quaestiones et distinctiones or the Lectura super Codice .
