Pierre de Schiervel

Pierre Leonard Louis Marie Baron de Schiervel (born February 10, 1783 in 's-Gravenvoeren , Limburg Province , Belgium ; † November 4, 1866 in Rotem , Limburg Province, Belgium) was a Belgian politician of the Catholic Party and President of the Senate .

biography

In 1813 he settled in Ommerstein Castle in Rotem and in 1825 became mayor of Rotem. In 1830 he was a member of the National Congress as a representative of Roermond . This elected Leopold I as the first king of the Belgians after the original candidate Louis d'Orléans, duc de Nemours was dropped due to violent intervention by London .

After Belgium was founded, he became a member of the Senate in 1831 and was a member of it until 1848. He was also governor of the province of East Flanders from 1837 to 1843 .

Between November 13, 1838 and May 27, 1848 he was President of the Senate of Belgium. At the same time he was governor of Limburg province from 1843 to 1857 . After a law in 1848 banned simultaneous membership in the Senate and the activity as provincial governor, he resigned as senator and remained governor of Limburg. As such, he campaigned for the expansion of the road network, agriculture, education and public health.

Part of the Groene Boulevard, today's R70 , in Hasselt in Schiervellaan was named in his honor .
