Piesma maculatum is a bug from the family of the bug bug (Piesmatidae).
features
The bugs are 2.3 to 3.1 millimeters long. The species can be distinguished from Parapiesma quadratum by the shape of the pronotum : the side margins have a clearly recognizable notch, which the similar species lacks. The animals more often have fully developed (macroptere), less often shortened (brachyptere) wings.
distribution and habitat
The species is distributed from North Africa to the south of Scandinavia and the south of the British Isles as well as east over the Black Sea region and Central Asia to China and Japan. It is widespread in Central Europe and is usually the most common type of family. In the UK, it is widespread in England and Wales, but is more common in the south. Different habitats are settled, which can be dry to very humid.
Way of life
Like Piesma capitatum, the animals live on the foxtail family (Chenopodiaceae), especially in the wild ( Atriplex ) and goosefoot ( Chenopodium ). In search of suitable wintering locations, the macropter animals often fly over long distances. They overwinter in dry litter , in wooden crevices or under loose bark. The animals also fly in the spring looking for food plants. They can also be found in habitats that are completely untypical for them, such as raised bogs. The development proceeds in the same way as with Piesma capitatum : mating and oviposition take place in April and May, from June the adult animals of the new generation appear, which reproduce completely again in autumn.
