Pieter Mulier (* around 1615 in Haarlem ; † May 26, 1659 there ; in some sources the year of birth is 1610 and the year of death 1670) was a Dutch painter of maritime pieces .

Life

To distinguish it from his son of the same name (* 1637 in Haarlem; † 1701 in Milan ) he was also called the elder. His son is said to have been named Cavaliere Pietro Tempesta after Houbraken in Italy .

Nothing is known about the year of birth of the elder. Only from a marriage certificate from 1635 can one deduce that he would probably have to be 20 years old and thus could have been born around 1615. From this marriage certificate it is also known that both bride and groom come from Haarlem. Three years later he is registered in the Haarlem St. Lucas guild and another two years later he registers an apprentice. Pieter Mulier paid six students for this apprentice to register as a citizen and one student as a servant. He can be found in the Haarlem files until 1658. Among other things, he had received beer for 27 guilders and he vowed to pay for it with paintings. An application for permission to sell paintings has also been received. On May 26, 1659 he was buried in the Groten Kerk in Haarlem.

His work can be described as a specialized marine painter. The works mostly show estuaries with rainy weather, small works with stormy navies and beach views. As one of the few marine painters, he shows stormy seascapes with high cloudy skies in portrait format. He is assigned to the so-called gray school of tonalism in the succession of Jan Porcellis and Simon de Vlieger . His painting style shows a fluid hand with visible brush marks. His works, signed with P_M_L , have simple motifs in which details are left out. The special atmosphere of his work is created by the interplay of sunlight and clouds and their reflection on the water.
