Pietro Arduino (born July 18, 1728 in Caprino di Verona , † April 13, 1805 in Padua ) was an Italian botanist . Its official botanical author abbreviation is “ Ard. ".

Live and act

He studied in Verona with the French botanist Jean-François Séguier . Séguier, who recognized Arduino's talents, recommended him to Giulio Pontedera , director of the Padua Botanical Garden . He hired him as a gardener. After Pontedera's death in 1757, he practically took over the management of the garden, but nominally continued to work as a gardener there. In 1760 the position of director was officially re-filled with Giovanni M. Marsili (1727-1795). From 1761 Arduino had a long-term correspondence with Carl von Linné , whom he admired very much. Via Linné, Arduino came into contact and a. with the Italian naturalist Domenico Vandelli(1735-1816). In 1765 he was given the Chair of Agriculture at the University of Padua . Incidentally, this was the first chair of its kind in Italy.

The Italian geologist Giovanni Arduino (1714–1795) was his brother and the farmer Luigi Arduino (1750–1833) was his son.

Honors

The genus Arduina Adans was named in his honor . named from the umbelliferae family (Apiaceae).
