Jean-François Séguier

Jean-François Séguier (born November 25, 1703 in Nîmes ; † September 1, 1784 ibid) was a French botanist and archaeologist. Its official botanical author abbreviation is " Ség. "

Life

Séguier studied law and botany in Paris with Antoine de Jussieu at the University of Montpellier . He accompanied the archaeologist Scipione Maffei on his travels in Europe. As a result, he came to Verona from 1736 to 1755 and then back to his hometown Nîmes. His main work was in the field of antiquity. In 1758 he succeeded in reading the inscription on the Maison Carrée .

From 1749 he was a corresponding member of the Académie royale des sciences , from 1772 also of the Académie des inscriptions et belles-lettres .

The genus Seguieria Loefl are named in honor of Seguier . from the family of Pokeweed (Phytolaccaceae) as well as the types quilting spurge ( Euphorbia seguieriana Neck. , Euphorbiaceae), Seguier buttercup ( Ranunculus seguieri Vill. ; Ranunculaceae), Seguier saxifrage ( Saxifraga seguieri Spreng. , Saxifragaceae) and the bush Carnation ( Dianthus seguieri Vill .; Caryophyllaceae).
