Pietro Bracci (born June 16, 1700 in Rome , † February 13, 1773 there ) was an Italian sculptor of the late Baroque.

Life and education

Pietro Bracci, son of the stone cutter Bartolomeo Cesare Bracci and Anna Francesca Lorenzoni, acquired knowledge of philosophy and literature from the Jesuits before working as a sculptor . Giuseppe Chiari , with whom he worked for 6 years, and Camillo Rusconi , the most important sculptor in Rome in the first quarter of the 18th century, whose sculptures he studied, are considered to be his teachers . In 1724 he was admitted to the Accademia dell'Arcadia . In the same year Faustina married Mancini and a year later he opened his own workshop in Piazza Trinità dei Monti.

In 1756 he became president of the Accademia di San Luca . In his time he was considered an excellent restorer of ancient statues.

Works

Pietro Bracci created numerous sculptures, especially busts of popes and clerics. From 1725 he kept a diary with a list of works, so that today it is possible to trace his works and the time they were created. His most important works include:

  • 1725 Terracotta relief Josia, King of Judah hands over the money for the temple in the Accademia di San Luca. Bracci won first prize in the sculpture class at the Accademia in 1725 with this relief. It already shows the elements of that elegant late baroque (almost rococo) style that was characteristic of his entire career as a sculptor.
  • 1730 two pairs of marble putti on the sides of the choir of the Basilica Sant'Agostino in Campo Marzio during the renovation work by Luigi Vanvitelli
  • 1730 Orders for statues for the Palácio Nacional de Mafra monastery palace in Portugal
  • 1734 The purity on the side of the tomb Benedict XIII. in the Cappella di San Domenico in the Basilica of Santa Maria sopra Minerva (Rome)
  • 1736 models for the two statues of Pope Clement XII. ; executed in marble in Ravenna and in bronze in the Capitoline Museum in Rome
  • 1739 sculptures for the apse of the cathedral of Naples together with Paolo Posi
  • 1741 Sculpture Humility for the facade of the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore
  • 1742 sculptures for the tomb of Maria Clementina Sobieska in St. Peter's Basilica.
  • 1754 Colossal statue of Saint Vincent de Paul for St. Peter's Basilica
  • 1762 Completion of his most famous work, the Group Neptune and the Tritons at the Fontana di Trevi
  • 1763 Tomb for Pope Benedict XIV in St. Peter's Basilica
