The Pietro Venuti boat was laid down on December 9, 2009 at the Fincantieri shipyard in Muggiano near La Spezia as part of a German-Italian joint project . The “launch” took place on October 9, 2014, the handover to the Navy on July 6, 2016.

Naming

The boat is named after the non-commissioned officer and torpedo mechanic Pietro Venuti, who was born in Codroipo on June 10, 1912 , and who perished on June 24, 1940 on the submarine Luigi Galvani off the coast of Oman . After a shell impact and severe water ingress in the stern torpedo room, Venuti stayed there while diving and closed the bulkhead, which saved the lives of most of the crew.
