Salvatore Todaro (S 526) is a service in the Italian Navy standing submarine of the class 212 A .
history
The boat was built as part of a German-Italian joint project by Fincantieri in Muggiano near La Spezia and named after the Italian submarine commander Salvatore Todaro , who died in 1942, on November 6, 2003 . At the end of March 2006, the handover to the Navy and then an intensive training and exercise program took place. In February and March 2007, the boat took part in Operation Active Endeavor . On May 24, 2008, the boat left for a training voyage lasting several months towards the USA . Stops were Ponta Delgada in the Azores , Hamilton in Bermuda , which the Azores reached in a 15-day underwater voyage, Mayport near Jacksonville in Florida , from where Todaro took part in a Joint Task Force Exercise with the US Navy , and then the Norfolk naval base in Virginia and the Groton submarine base in Connecticut , from where exercise CONUS 08 was part of. Todaro visited New York City from October 10 to 15 , where he represented Italy in the celebrations for Columbus Day . Another stay in Groton followed and then the return to Taranto , which was reached on December 3, 2008. The following year it participated in NATO exercise Noble Manta 2009 in the Mediterranean Sea . On October 14, 2009, the Todaro boat received its naval flag in the port of Chioggia , completing its integration into the active fleet. Todaro is subordinate to the “Submarine Forces Command” (MARICOSOM) with home port of Taranto.
Naming
Salvatore Todaro is the first class 212 A submarine put into service in Italy. Therefore, the Italian boats of the class are also referred to as the "Todaro class" after the type boat . The other boats in the class are Scirè (S 527) and Pietro Venuti (S 528) . A fourth boat called Romeo Romei (S 529) is still under construction.
The Italian Navy has officially stopped using ship name prefixes since 1946 . Until 1946 the prefix “R.Smg.” Was used for submarines. ( Regio Sommergibile or “Royal Dive Boat”) in use. For reasons of tradition, Italian submarines still use the prefix "Smg." On some occasions (for example Smg. Salvatore Todaro ) and also use the short form of the name, in this case Smg. Todaro . For reasons of tradition, the term sommergibile ( diving boat ) is still used and not the more appropriate term sottomarino (submarine). The prefix ITS ( Italian Ship, Italian Submarine ) and the identifier (S 526) are NATO designations.
Salvatore Todaro was named Salvatore Todaro from 1966 to 1994 on a corvette of the De Cristofaro class built by Ansaldo in Livorno .
