Piero Vettori (Latin Petrus Victorius ; * 1499 in Florence ; † December 8, 1585 ibid) was an Italian humanist and philosopher.

Vettori was born in Florence into an old noble family and studied philosophy and classical philology in Pisa and Florence . As a young man, Vettori represented republican principles in the political life of his hometown, as an opponent of the Medici he had to withdraw from political life in 1530, but returned in 1532. In 1538 Duke Cosimo I de 'Medici appointed him to a chair for classical studies, as professor of the Greek and Latin languages ​​in Florence, which he held until shortly after his death. Vettori was founded by Pope Julius III. raised to the rank of count. Vettori brought out the works of Marcus Tullius Cicero , Terenz , Gaius Sallustius Crispus , Aristotle , Euripides and other ancient authors. He wrote Latin poems and letters and corresponded with many scholars inside and outside Italy. 1553-69 he published 54 volumes of his "Variae lectiones" (lectures and commentaries).
