Pinetown is a city in the South African province of KwaZulu-Natal , which belongs to the metropolitan municipality eThekwini . It is located 16 km west of Durban at an altitude between 305 and 395 meters above sea level. In 2011 it had 144,026 inhabitants.

history

The city developed around the Wayside Hotel in 1850 ; the hotel itself had been built a year earlier on the road connecting Durban to Pietermaritzburg . The city was named after the governor of the then colony of Natal , Sir Benjamin Pine . During the Second Boer War, the British built a concentration camp near Pinetown in which Boer women and children were interned.

Pinetown has been part of the metropolitan municipality eThekwini since 2000. It is in constituency 18. The area from Cowies Hill in the east along Old Main Road / M 1 to Westmead in the west is commonly referred to as Pinetown, although the urban area stretches from Caversham Glen to Manors . Buildings of the original city can still be found today at the intersection of Old Main Road and Stapelton Road .

The Pinetown Cricket Club was founded in 1873. It is believed to be the oldest cricket club in KwaZulu-Natal and one of the oldest in South Africa. The club was originally located on the site of today's Civic Center and is now located in Lahee Park . Under the chairman of the club and at the same time mayor of Pinetown Vernon Hall, ten top-class cricket matches were held on the club premises between 1974 and 1979.

In the south of the parish is the former Trappist monastery of the Mariannhiller Missionaries, founded in 1882 on the area of ​​the former Zeekoegat farm .

Pinetown is known as a car town because of the many car dealerships on Old Main Road . The city has several shopping centers and hardware stores. There is a state hospital ( St. Mary’s ) in Mariannhill , a private hospital ( Crompton ) and a private medical center.
