analysis

Themes and motifs

Song Fang said of her film that it shows the relationship between an individual and himself, between her and others, between her and the world. The first of the three relationships gives the film the basic structure. But it is inextricably linked to the other two and it is only the balance between the three levels that makes a whole person.

The focus in this film is on the inner workings of the protagonist, her perceptions, feelings and moods. In particular, it is about the stressful sadness that is in some people and from which it is difficult for them to free themselves even in contact with their friends and family. But if the will to live is stronger than sadness, there is a way because feelings can be changed.

Through Lin's eyes, Ping Jing also emphasizes aspects of human existence in connection with nature, the director said.

Visual style

The film uses long, calm shots that show the protagonist in different places and on the go. Parks with trees and bamboo are used as a means to represent interiors. As a result, the film contains meditative elements that can be interpreted in different ways. With reference to ping jing , the director said that the medium of film is particularly suitable for visually capturing moments that cannot be described using language.
