The tailed butterwort ( Pinguicula moranensis ) is a carnivorous plant from the genus of the butterwort in the Orcheosanthus section . It is native to Mexico and Guatemala and was first described in 1817 by Alexander von Humboldt , Aimé Bonpland and Karl Sigismund Kunth .

description

Towards winter the plant forms a winter rosette with a diameter of only 5 mm and larger leaves again in spring. The fleshy, light green (reddened in a sunny location), oval leaves then form a rosette up to 20 cm in diameter lying flat on the ground. On the surface, the leaves are sticky from the trapping secretions they use to catch small insects (e.g. sciarid gnats , ants ) and, as soon as prey is obtained, digested them by enzymes . From May to August, Pinguicula moranensis blooms on a stalk up to 25 cm high, growing from the center of the rosette, red with a white throat in a single, zygomorphic, long-spurred flower with a diameter of 5 cm.

distribution

The tailed butterwort is native to Central America with occurrences in Mexico and Guatemala . It is the butterwort with the largest distribution area from the Orcheosanthus section . It prefers alkaline, gypsum-containing locations in sparse pine and oak forests as well as temperate mountain forests.

Systematics

The first description was made by the German botanist Karl Sigismund Kunth , who used the plant material collected by Alexander von Humboldt and Aimé Bonpland on their great trip to South America (from 1799 to 1804) in 1818 in the second volume of his seven-volume work Nova genera et species plantarum quas in peregrinatione ad plagam aequinoctialem orbis novi collegerunt Bonpland et Humboldt described. The taxon Pinguicula caudata , established in 1832 by Diederich Franz Leonhard von Schlechtendal , is synonymous .
