Pinkerton is the second studio album by the American alternative rock band Weezer and was released on September 24, 1996 by Geffen- Records ( Universal ). The name of the album refers to a character from Rivers Cuomo's favorite opera Madame Butterfly . Pinkerton reached number 65 in the German album charts.

Pinkerton was far less commercially successful than her debut album Weezer (The Blue Album) . Nevertheless, many fans consider it the best Weezer album ever. This is due, among other things, to the lyrics, which are more in-depth compared to the previous album. In addition, Pinkerton is characterized by a much harder guitar by Rivers Cuomo that comes to the fore. The songs, which were all written by Rivers Cuomo , are mostly about lovesickness and sexual frustration. Since the lyrics are often written in the first person, the album is said to have Cuomo's autobiographical traits.

The songs Tired Of Sex , Getchoo , No Other One and Why Bother? , as well as the B-sides Devotion , I Just Threw Out The Love Of My Dreams and Waiting On You were initially intended for a rock opera planned by Cuomo with the title Songs From The Black Hole . However, this concept album was never completed and has not been released to this day.

There is a picture of the Japanese artist Hiroshige on the album cover . The picture is called "Kambara yoru no yuki" ("Night Snow at Kambara") and shows, as the title suggests, a Japanese snow landscape at night.

Music videos

The video for El Scorcho was directed by Mark Romanek . It shows the band in a room that is lit by various lamps and lights. Rivers Cuomo wanted a video that wouldn't distract attention from the song because he'd put a lot of effort into writing. During the shooting there was a dispute between the band members as well as between Cuomo and the director. Patrick Wilson and Matt Sharp had no understanding of Cuomo's desired seriousness and preferred to fool around. In the end, Rivers Cuomo was so dissatisfied with the result that he made his own edit from the finished video.

A video was shot for The Good Life , which alternately shows the story of a pizza delivery woman (played by Mary Lynn Rajskub ) and the band in the studio. As in the El Scorcho video, you can see Rivers Cuomo striving for a serious portrayal, while Patrick Wilson and Matt Sharp take a more fun stance. The video was directed by Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris .
