Angus - voll cool (Original title: Angus ) is an American-British-French-German comedy film directed by Patrick Read Johnson from 1995 . The short story A Brief Moment In The Life of Angus Bethune by Chris Crutcher served as a literary template . The eponymous main character played Charlie Talbert , who thus took on his first role in a film.

Angus Bethune is a 14 year old, overweight boy. He is shy and insecure, but is considered a good student. Troy Wedberg is his only real friend.

Angus thinks a lot of Melissa Lefevre, who goes to the same school as him. She has a boyfriend, Rick. Angus is surprised when he is invited to go to the school ball with Melissa.

Rick and his friends kidnap Troy and want to hear from him what could be embarrassing to Angus. Troy tries to escape, breaking his arm. Rick is given a videotape showing Angus dancing awkwardly. The tape is playing at school, making Melissa angry. She breaks up with Rick and reveals that she has bulimia . Angus and Melissa eventually become a couple.

James Berardinelli wrote on ReelViews that the film was neither "surprising" nor "original" but "works to a certain extent". The director tries too hard to please the audience. However, Berardinelli praised the children's representations.

Roger Ebert wrote in the Chicago Sun-Times on September 15, 1995 that there had already been numerous films with a similar plot in previous years. He praised the portrayal of Charlie Talbert.

The lexicon of international films said: "Unspectacular but sensitively staged, the film gives away a lot of its quality through the completely asexually drawn characters."
