Pinot Grigio delle Venezie

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Pinot Grigio delle Venezie is a new quality level for Pinot Gris in the three northeastern wine regions of Italy Veneto , Friuli and Trentino . The region stretches from Lake Garda to the Gulf of Trieste . It applies according to the Italian Wine Law, which achieved the status of a Denominazione di origine controllata with the 2017 vintage . These wines were previously classified as IGT and have been on the market since the end of 2018. The existing 20 other DOCs will be retained. The association responsible for control was founded in April 2017.

About 85 percent of the Italian Pinot Grigio production grows in this wine region and is also the world's largest growing area for this grape variety. The new legislation means that wine production is subject to stricter quality criteria. This should have a sales-promoting effect, especially in export. The most important characteristic is the hectare yield , which has decreased from 152 to 126 hectoliters per hectare . In addition, a natural alcohol level of at least 11 must be achieved, which corresponds to about 80 degrees Oechsle . The character of the grape variety should be retained with "fresh and harmonious, from dry to slightly sweet", the body of the vintages from 2017 should be a bit fuller and more aromatic. The president of this quality association, Albino Armani, understands the new wine as the prototype of the Pinot Grigios Italian style.

Furthermore, it is stipulated that the Pinot Grigio delle Venezie may also be mashed as a sparkling wine or as a cuvée with precisely defined other grape varieties ( Chardonnay , Müller-Thurgau , Pinot Blanc , Garganega , Verduzzo Friulano , Verduzzo Trevigiano ) .
