Pintoa chilensis is the only kind of the plant genus Pintoa within the family of the zygophyllaceae . This endemic occurs only in the Atacama Desert .

Vegetative characteristics

In Pintoa chilensis is low, rich branched shrub to 1.5 m height. Its branches are stiff and tomentose and have thickened nodes. At the base of the opposite leaves there are broad-skinned stipules. The leaves are pinnate in pairs with four to six pairs of lateral leaflets, the central main axis ends in a 1–2 millimeter long tip. The leaflets are asymmetrical, densely hairy and dotted with black dots on the underside.

Generative characteristics

The flowers are solitary in the leaf axils. The inflorescence consists of five sepals and 5 petals . The corollas are bright yellow and about 2 centimeters in diameter. There are 10 unequal stamens with broad basal scales. The five-fan ovary narrows into a style with a simple stigma . The fruit is a five-lobed, spherical-elongated capsule fruit about 1 centimeter in diameter. There are several flattened seeds in each of the five compartments.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 20.

Occurrence

Pintoa chilensis is endemic to Chile . The main distribution is in the Atacama Desert, especially in the southern part. There are also some disjoint locations.

Systematics

The genus Pintoa was established in 1845/46 with the first description of Pintoa chilensis by Claude Gay in Flora Chilena , Volume 1 (4).
