Pioneer is a village in Williams County in the US state of Ohio . According to the statistical data of the year 2000, 1460 inhabitants lived in the municipality.

geography

Pioneer is located in the far northwest of Ohio, right on the Michigan border . The Indiana border is approximately 19 miles (30 km) west and is accessible via the Ohio Turnpike Highway, which runs a few miles south of town. Directly in Pioneer is the small Pioneer Lake, which is used by sport fishermen and as a recreation area. To the north and west of Pioneer begins with Lake Seneca , Lake Diane and Merry Lake, a larger lake area that is developed for tourism.

history

The place was founded in 1842-43 by Philetus Walter Norris , who later became Superintendent of Yellowstone National Park , and his brother-in-law Owen McCarty. At that time the area was still deserted: in 1848, the settler GR Joy noted that there were only four houses between Pioneer and the later county capital of Bryan . The settlement grew rapidly. In 1850 there were already 222 people in Pioneer. In 1853 the first roads were laid out in the village. Joy and Norris were both ambitious business people and competitors. Norris built a flour mill, sawmill, and brick factory and became the postmaster of the new settlement. Joy built a second sawmill, a horse and cattle breeding facility and was a moneylender. While Norris left Pioneer in 1861 to fight in the American Civil War , Joy stayed in the place where his descendants live to this day.

The railway connection of the Toledo and Western Railway brought further upswing in 1903 . Pioneer exported wool, flour and other goods. The economy flourished until the Great Depression when the railway line was shut down. A local businessman kept the business going until 1954.
