history

The area around today's Pionki was first mentioned in 1391. Since the 14th century there have been two villages on the Zagożdżon River , which flows through the area, in addition to Pionki, Zagożdżon , each with a water mill . To this day, two memorial stones remind us of January 1, 1467; on the one hand to the birth of King Sigismund the First and on the other hand to a hunt that Casimir IV organized near Pionki.

There is a document from 1554 which records the income from the Pionki sawmill. In 1629 an inspection of the royal estates took place, in which the circumstances of the serfdom at that time were described in more detail. During the so-called Swedish Flood , when Poland was exposed to several invasions by neighboring powers, the mills on the Zagożdżon River, which are essential for the population, remained undamaged.

In 1718 the dilapidated Pionka mill had to be replaced by a new one, and in 1721 there was a third mill. In 1739 there were three houses with workshops for woodworking and an inn in the village next to the mills. In 1784, when the area was under Russian rule after the first partition of Poland , the future general Aleksander Bezak received money for his loyal service in the Russian army, which he invested in Pionki. So a new sawmill could be built, and a monopoly on the manufacture and sale of alcohol. The exclusive right for the residents to fish in the two mill ponds was also introduced.

From 1839 serfs had the opportunity to buy themselves out and in 1840 enough money was available to repair the river bank fortifications. A census in 1844 showed that 43 people lived in Pionki and 96 in the neighboring village of Zagożdżon. In 1864 industrialization began with the construction of factories.

After the First World War , the place expanded further. From 1928 new houses, a swimming pool, stadium and a new St. Barbara church were built. In 1922 the sawmill employed 100 workers, and in 1923 a chemical factory was established. In 1922 a military facility was built to monitor the activities of foreign secret services. In 1938 the municipality built a modern public indoor swimming pool with a 25-meter lane and in 1939 Pionki received the status of a town with around 7,700 inhabitants.
