Pishchana ( Ukrainian Піщана ; Russian Песчаная Pestschanaja ) is a village in the north of the Ukrainian Odessa Oblast with about 3200 inhabitants (2001).

Pishchana is the only village in the 72.24 km² district council of the same name in the north of the Balta Rajon .

The village is located on both banks of the Sawranka ( Савранка ; also Sawran ), a 98 km long tributary of the Southern Bug 27 km north of the district center of Balta and about 250 km north of the Odessa oblast center . The city of Uman , located in Cherkassy Oblast , is 95 km northeast of the village. The regional roads P-71 and P-54 intersect in the village .

history

The origin of the village dates back to the second half of the 16th century, when peasants resettled by Poles from the historic Brazlavschtschyna ( Брацлавщина ) region in eastern Podolia settled on an island in the Savranka River after they founded the village of Pestschanoe ( Песчаное ). The village of Zurkanowka ( Цуркановка ) arose on the right bank of the river . In the first half of the 17th century the two villages merged to form a settlement called Peschanaya. In 1846 the village received the status of a small town and became a Volost center in Ujesd Balta.

The name of the village Pishchana (German: "Sandy") comes from the sandy soil on the left bank of the river.
