The Pistol River and its catchment area

The Pistol River is a 32 km long river in the US state of Oregon .

It flows from its origin at Sugarloaf Mountain in Siskiyou National Forest in a generally southwestern direction to its confluence at Pistol River State Scenic Viewpoint , 10 miles south of Gold Beach . The river got its name because the pioneer James Mace lost his gun in the river in 1853.

Populations of king salmon , silver salmon , rainbow trout and cutthroat trout live in the Pistol River . The river runs largely through forest areas where the timber industry , the habitat has damaged the fish. Therefore, work is being done to restore the habitat.

Run

On the upper reaches of the Siskiyou National Forest, the river first flows south and receives Meadow Creek and East Fork Pistol River from the left, before turning southwest and joins the North Fork Pistol River from the right. About 18 km above the confluence with the ocean, Sunrise Creek flows from the left, then the Pistol River takes a westerly direction. South Fork Pistol River flows from the left and then, about eight kilometers above the confluence, shortly after each other Deep Creek and Glade Creek from the right. The Crook Creek unites as a right tributary in the village of Pistol River with the river, where the water flows under the Pistol River Loop Highway and US Highway 101 before emptying into the Pacific Ocean.

Catchment area

The catchment area of the Pistol River covers around 272 km² and lies entirely in Curry County of Oregon. In 2001, 57% of the catchment area was public land controlled by the United States Forest Service (52%) and Bureau of Land Management (5%), with the remainder being privately owned. Forestry was the dominant land use, private and public forests covered around 97% of the catchment area. The remaining three percent of the land area was divided between arable farming, pasture farming and settlement areas.
