Pixabay.com is an international website for photos, illustrations, vector graphics and videos. It was developed by Hans Braxmeier and Simon Steinberger and comprises more than 1.8 million images (as of June 29, 2020). These images are made available to the online community by photographers and graphic designers .

history

The company was founded on November 24, 2010 in Ulm . In March 2012, the simple image database was fundamentally redesigned into an interactive community platform that is available in 26 languages. With the programming interface (API) released in May 2012, users and developers can access Pixabay, search for images and integrate the results into their own pages. The API will u. a. used by the online drawing program Psykopaint and the website builder Jimdo . From June 2012 to January 2019 Pixabay u. a. represented alongside Flickr , Google and YouTube on the “CC Search” search page by Creative Commons . Two extensions for Adobe Photoshop and Microsoft Office have been available since 2018 .

At the beginning of 2019, the previously used Creative Commons license CC0 was replaced by a separate license. It is partly denied whether the pictures are still suitable for Open Educational Resources (free teaching materials). Particularly criticized is the fact that Pixabay has since then also marked images uploaded before 2019 with the new license on the website, although they were still published under the CC0. This represents an illegitimate notoriety of intellectual property rights . In addition, your own license uses indefinite legal terms such as "distribution".
