history

Founding and early years (2003-2011)

Shutterstock was founded in 2003 by American entrepreneur and programmer Jon Oringer. Oringer created his own online marketplace. Oringer initially uploaded 30,000 of his own photos and made them available as a subscription for $ 49 a month. The subscription gave you unlimited downloads. When demand exceeded his photo supply, Oringer began hiring additional contributors. Videos have been uploaded to Shutterstock since 2006 with the introduction of Shutterstock Footage. In 2007 the company had 1.8 million photos. Shutterstock expanded beyond the subscription model to à la carte prices in August 2008 .

On September 23, 2009, Shutterstock announced that it had bought Bigstock, a competing photography agency. Shutterstock CEO Jon Oringer said the addition "will enable Shutterstock to better serve the diverse payment preferences of customers around the world." Shutterstock had 11 million images in its library by early 2010. In February 2011, Shutterstock announced a two-year partnership with the American Institute of Graphic Arts (AIGA) to provide creative inspiration for its members. A Shutterstock app for the iPad has been available since November 2011 and is available free of charge.

IPO (2012-2013)

Shutterstock Images LLC announced the Shutterstock Instant tool in May 2012 . Shutterstock Instant was launched under the auspices of the newly formed Shutterstock Labs. Also in May 2012, Shutterstock submitted an initial public offering on the New York Stock Exchange. On October 17, 2012, Shutterstock was listed on the stock exchange. In November 2012, Shutterstock made its debut with an iOS application, which is intended for iPhone and iPad , among others .

Shutterstock, Inc. announced Spectrum, a new "Image Discovery Tool" in March 2013. At that time, Shutterstock had 24 million licensable photos, vectors, and illustrations in its portfolio. In August 2013, Shutterstock and Facebook announced a partnership to integrate the Shutterstock library into advertisements. This enabled advertisers on Facebook to select images from Shutterstock. Back then, Shutterstock was available in 20 languages.

New partnerships (2013-2014)

In September 2013, Shutterstock launched Offset, a marketplace that focused on high quality photos from established artists. A few months later, Shutterstock launched its first Android app. In October 2013, Shutterstock opened offices in Berlin . Shutterstock shares had reached a market value of $ 2.5 billion by the fall of 2013, while sales for 2013 were $ 235 million.

In March 2014, Shutterstock acquired Webdam, a provider of online digital asset management software. Also in March 2014, Shutterstock relocated its headquarters to the Empire State Building . In May 2014, Shutterstock and Salesforce partnered to integrate Shutterstock's image database with Salesforce's social studio. On September 2, 2014, Shutterstock announced that it had exceeded 2 million uploaded video clips. Shortly thereafter, Shutterstock unveiled a new app designed to help contributors upload and categorize photos. Shutterstock's revenue was $ 328 million in 2014, a 39% increase over 2013.
