Life

Demidow from the Demidow family was the youngest son Grigori Akinfijewitsch Demidows and grandson Akinfi Nikititsch Demidows . Together with his brothers Alexander and Pawel , he became a student at the University of Göttingen in 1751 . He learned languages, studied music and played the double bass . The brothers had to write weekly reports to their father. During the brothers' ten-year Grand Tour , Demidov spent 58,000 rubles .

In September 1761 the brothers returned to Russia . The father died two months later. The three brothers inherited 4 copper works , 3 iron works , a salt works , a tannery , 10 houses in different towns and 9500 serf farmers and workers. In 1765 the three brothers agreed on an economically sensible, even distribution of the inheritance. Pyotr Demidov received two ironworks and a house in St. Petersburg on the Moika . His brother Pavel was not interested in entrepreneurship, so in 1967 he sold his Roshdestvensky ironworks to Demidow. Demidow later built another ironworks there. In addition, he received from Pavel a second house in St. Petersburg next to the first.

In 1783 Demidow acquired the Siworizy farm in what is now the Gatchinsky rajon . There he had Ivan Yegorowitsch Starow build a mansion and create a landscape park on the Siworka River. To this end, a new stone Nikolaikirche was built in 1784 .

In 1800 Demidov was appointed senior director of the St. Petersburg Business School and the secret council (3rd class ), while the writer Vasily Sergejewitsch Podschiwalow became director. The school was founded on the initiative and with the money of his uncle Prokofi Akinfijewitsch Demidow in Moscow in 1772 as a school for merchant children at the orphanage . Ivan Ivanovich Bezkoi created the curriculum , the first goal of which was the development of personality, so that the imparting of the knowledge necessary for commercial activities was only second. Six-year-old boys were admitted every three years and stayed in school free of charge until graduation after 15 years. There was little interest from merchant families, as the sons were reluctant to do without the cooperation of their sons for 15 years. In 1800 the school was separated from the orphanage and moved to St. Petersburg. School time should be shortened to 10 years with the renewal of the curriculum. Demidow now proved to be a capable administrator who vigorously reformed the school despite the opposition. He was supported by Freiherr von Campenhausen in defending the interests of the school . Demidow donated considerable sums to the school. Demidov's work was very much appreciated by Empress Maria Feodorovna . In 1802 Demidow received the Russian Order of St. Anna 1st Class. In 1805 he went on a longer vacation for health reasons and left the service in 1806.

The couple had four daughters and two sons. Demidowa became known through her liaison with Count Alexei Grigoryevich Orlov . When Orlov lived in Italy in the 1770s , Demidowa lived in Pisa . In 1782 Demidowa Orlow married her eldest niece Evdokija Nikolajewna Lopuchina . Demidova was buried in the cemetery of the Alexander Nevsky Monastery in St. Petersburg . Demidov was buried in the Lazarus Cemetery at the Alexander Nevsky Monastery.
