Placebo is the self-titled debut album by the British band Placebo . The album was released on July 16, 1996 by Virgin Records and reached number 5 on the UK album charts. The third single Nancy Boy came to position 4 on the charts.
With their debut album, Placebo embarked on different musical paths than the then predominant Britpop movement around Oasis and Blur . The band relies on classic rock with punk influences on their album . In contrast to her later albums Without You I'm Nothing and Black Market Music , Placebo avoided dark, melancholy ballads. There are also no electronic elements to be heard , like on Sleeping with Ghosts .
