Placidus Stainbacher , also Steinbacher or Stainpacher OSB (* 1642 in Straubing ; † December 25, 1720 in Frauenzell ) was a German Benedictine in Mallersdorf Abbey and later abbot in Frauenzell Abbey .

biography

Placidus Stainbacher came to Mallersdorf from Straubing in 1657. Here he entered the Benedictine monastery and made his solemn profession after completing the novitiate . For higher studies he was sent to the University of Dillingen and the Benedictine University of Salzburg . He then held the offices of prior and novice master in the Mallersdorf monastery. In 1680 he came to the University of Salzburg as head of the convict and in 1694 he was appointed director of the joint study program of the Bavarian Benedictine Congregation , which at that time was in the convent near Regensburg.

On November 16 of the same year, after Abbot Gregor von Frauenzell's resignation, he was postulated by the local convent as his successor as abbot. In 1711 he was also appointed Praeses of the Bavarian Benedictine Congregation; he held this office until 1717. Contemporary sources emphasize Placidus Stainbacher's piety, his sense of duty, his erudition and his prudent and wise management. His activity as abbot and president falls during the War of the Spanish Succession (1701–1714), in which Bavaria was also involved and the Frauenzell monastery and the surrounding area were affected by its effects. In addition, there were new conflicts with the Lords of Brennberg, who tried to reassert their previous rights through Frauenzell Monastery.

Abbot Placidus Stainbacher died on Christmas Day 1720 and was buried in the old monastery church of Frauenzell. His tombstone survived the demolition and rebuilding of the baroque church and is now in the cloister of the former monastery.
