The American Platinum Eagle is an official US platinum coin in the currency US dollar . The coin is one of the investment coins .
The first Platinum Eagles were released by the United States Mint in 1997 . They are available in fine weights of 1 ⁄ 10 , ¼, ½ and 1 troy ounce . The US Mint guarantees that the coins contain the specified amount (in ounces) of ".9995 fine platinum".
For coin collectors, "Proof" quality coins are issued. The specialty of these Proof American Platinum Eagles is that they are the only investment coins in the USA that have a differently designed reverse every year.
