Beaches and bays in Mallorca

Platja des Coll Baix is a pebble beach on the north coast of the Spanish Balearic island of Mallorca . It is located in the northeast of the municipality of Alcúdia near the Cap de Menorca on the Victòria peninsula . The 220 meter long and 50 meter wide beach is located in a natural environment.

Location and description

The Platja des Coll Baix is part of the 11.984 km² nature reserve of special value (Àrea natural d'especial interès - ANAI) number 4, La Victoria (Alcúdia) , according to the Natural Area Act (ANAI / ARIP) to protect the soil from construction, and a special bird protection zone (Zona d'especial protecció per a les aus - ZEPA) in accordance with the bird protection directive 79/409 / EEC of the European Union . The closest settlements are Bonaire, 2.5 kilometers west of the beach, and Alcanada, which adjoins Port d'Alcúdia to the east, 3.2 kilometers in the southwest. The main town of the municipality, the small town of Alcúdia, is just over 5 kilometers away.

The beach is named after the pass located at a height of 140 meters with the name es Coll Baix ("the low pass") or just Coll Baix ("low pass") about 350 meters southwest of the coastline. On the pass there is a refuge ( Catalan Refugi , Castilian Refugio ) with a water dispenser next to it, as well as benches and tables as a resting place. The Coll Baix is the end point of the Camí de la Muntanya , which begins at Mal Pas on the north coast of the peninsula between Alcúdia and Bonaire.

The small bay between the foothills of the 342 meter high Puig des Boc ("Bocksberg") and the Cap de Menorca , on the southwestern edge of which the Platja des Coll Baix lies, is attributed to the Badia d'Alcúdia ("Bay of Alcúdia"), there the northern Cap des Pinar of the Victòria peninsula protrudes further out into the open sea than the Cap de Menorca in the south. The Badia de Pollença ("Bay of Pollença ") extends north of the peninsula .

The beach of Platja des Coll Baix , which is open to the sea to the northeast , is framed on the land side by steep rock walls, which are interrupted roughly in the middle by a rainwater runoff. In heavy rain, a small waterfall forms here. Above the demolition edge, pine forest covers the suitable areas. The terrain rises north of the Coll Baix up to 445 meters to the Talaia d'Alcúdia or Talaia de la Victória , the highest point on the Victòria peninsula , named after the ruins of a watchtower (Catalan Talaia ) from the 16th century.

General view of the beach

There is hardly any vegetation on the beach itself. This is due to the pebble subsoil, which is often washed out in stormy seas. In the north and south-east, the beach is bounded by rubble and larger rock debris . In the rear area, at the foot of the rock walls, there are some small Aleppo pines between dissgrass growth . Beach thistles and dune funnel-shaped daffodils appear here and there . Sometimes feral goats climb on the rock walls near the beach. The so-called Balearic billy goat (Boc Balear) , also Mallorcan wild goat (Cabra Salvatge Mallorquina) or "fine" goat (Fina) , a subtype of the domestic goat , is hunted game on Mallorca from September 1st to July 15th , also on the Victòria peninsula .

Due to its remoteness and difficult access, the Platja des Coll Baix is rarely visited. Nevertheless, the beach is the destination of some hikers, but also private boats and excursion ships. Excursions to Platja des Coll Baix are mainly offered from Port d'Alcúdia. Most of the time, however, these ships do not stay long in front of the shore, so that the beach is barely occupied with changing visitors. Because of the location in the nature reserve, there are no loungers and umbrellas to rent here, as is common on many beaches in Mallorca. There are also no buildings of any kind.

Access

Refuge on the Coll Baix

In addition to being accessible by sea, two paths lead to the Coll Baix pass . On the one hand there is a hiking trail from the parking lot at the Ermita de la Victòria over the Talaia d'Alcúdia and the Puig des Boc , on the other hand the drivable Camí de la Muntanya from Mal Pas. Below the pass there is a parking lot under pine trees at a height of 127 meters. After passing the refuge (Refugi) on the Coll Baix , a narrow path leads to the right along a mountain slope in the pine forest about 500 meters to the northeast. Then the forest clears and the path turns downhill in serpentines . It ends over the coastal rocks about 200 meters northeast of the beach. The rocks have to be climbed arduously to reach the Platja des Coll Baix .
