Low German word of the year
The Low German Word of the Year has been awarded since 1995. Until 2003 a word of the year had been chosen. Three categories have been rated since 2004: The most beautiful Low German word ( dat most beautiful Plattdütsche Wurt ), the best current Low German expression ( de best current Plattdütschen Utdruck ) and the favorite expression or proverb ( de leiwste Redensort or dat leiwste Proverb ).
For years, the competition was sponsored by the Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania regional home association. After the Landesheimatverband was dissolved in 2013 due to bankruptcy , the competition was only held every two years between 2011 and 2017. Because it was less advertised, the number of proposals submitted decreased. The selection was made by a jury from the Fritz Reuter Literature Museum, which was previously involved . Since the Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania Heimatverband was founded in 2015, it has been participating in the competition again and the most beautiful Low German word is chosen every year.
