history

The place probably has its origins in courtyards, which are assumed in this district for the time before the turn of the second millennium. Hümmel was first mentioned in a document as "Hoinbuil" in 1114 when parts of the local church were donated to the Münstereifel monastery . The district belonged to the Duchy of Jülich from 1320 and came together with this to the Electoral Palatinate in the 17th century .

After the end of the French occupation , where the place belonged to the canton of Adenau from 1798 to 1814 , Hümmel came from 1815 to the mayor's office of Aremberg in the Prussian Rhine province created in 1822 . From 1816 the place belonged to the Adenau district , after its dissolution in 1932 to the Ahrweiler district . During the local government reform on November 7, 1970, the previously independent municipalities Blindest (162 inhabitants), Hümmel (222) and Pitscheid (95) were merged under the name Hümmel.

The parish of Hümmel belonged to the Archdiocese of Cologne until 1821 and then became part of the Diocese of Trier as part of the renewal of the German diocese organization .

The municipal council in Hümmel consists of eight council members, who were elected by a majority vote in the local elections on May 26, 2019 , and the honorary local mayor as chairman. In the election period from 2009 to 2014, the municipal council consisted of twelve council members.

Economy and Infrastructure

Agriculture

40% of the community area is designated as agricultural land, around 20 agricultural businesses are located in the community.

forestry

The black snail (locality Hümmel-Blindest) is an indicator species for near-natural, intact forests.

With 743 hectares of forest, the municipality of Hümmel owns the majority of the 50% forested municipality area and is one of the few municipalities that completely dispenses with wood harvesters and instead works with rope and haulers, forest workers and sometimes even with back horses . In addition, the network of skidding lanes is 40 m (20 m is common in Germany), which results in less traffic and less damage to trees. This type of farming has been recognized by the FSC (license number C010647) and meets the criteria of the Working Group on Natural Forest Management .

The forest enterprise was twice (1996 and 1998) awarded the special price of the Verbandsgemeinde Adenau for ecological forest management and was the 2010 national winner in the BHU competition .

In addition, the community forestry enterprise Hümmel maintains franchise-supported burial forests .

The Wilde Beech project was started in 2011 in order to be able to put larger areas under full protection with financial effect . Old beech stands with individuals over 160 years old have become rare at 0.27% of the area in Germany. In Hümmel there are still around 100 hectares of such areas, which are to be withdrawn from use over decades (contractually secured) with the Wilde Beech project . Sponsorships from companies and private individuals are used to cover costs. For this, too, Hümmel was selected as one of 365 locations in the land of ideas .

The community cooperates with the Institute for Environmental Research at RWTH Aachen University for the scientific evaluation of forest management . In 2010 and 2011, four theses were successfully completed, which addressed the forest (construction) in Hümmel.

hunt

In order to reduce the game population to an environmentally friendly level, the shooting plans were gradually increased and citizen hunt was introduced on an area of 85 ha . In this, the game is no longer fed / kirrt and the citizens are entitled to hunt . From the 2013/2014 hunting year , around a third of the total area in the municipality will be hunted by the Hümmel Hunting Association on its own. As a district-wide innovation, the area previously leased by a hunter is divided into five stalking areas with a duration of one year. This is in contrast to the usual nationwide lease agreements that run for at least ten years . On the one hand, the precise contractual conditions enable the municipality to react quickly to the silvicultural situation that is influenced by the game, on the other hand, the division and short contractual commitment expands the scope of those who can afford hunting in Hümmel. Analogous to the established model of citizens hunt is in the game districts, the feeding place and feeding prohibited the trophy breeding abolished and only bowl game may be hunted.
