Pleasant Adam Hackleman

Pleasant A. Hackleman (* 15. November 1814 in Franklin County , Indiana ; † 4. October 1862 at the Battle of Corinth , Mississippi ) was an American lawyer , politician the US Whig Party and the Republican Party as well as Brigadier General of the US Army in Civil War .

Life

Hackleman, son of Major John Hackleman, who served in the British-American War of 1812 , first worked as a farmer and then studied law . After his legal admission he was in May 1837, first as a lawyer in Rushville down, but he was back in August 1837 Judge of the Probate Court (Probate Court) of Rush County elected and worked there until 1,841th

He then began his political career in 1841 when he was elected as a candidate for the Whig Party for a member of the Indiana House of Representatives. In 1842 he applied unsuccessfully as a candidate for the Whig Party for a seat in the US House of Representatives . After several years of activity as a clerk of Rush County, he ran again as a candidate for the Republicans in 1858 for a seat in the US House of Representatives. In 1860 he was one of the delegates at the Republican National Convention in Chicago , which Abraham Lincoln put up as a candidate for the office of US President . In February 1861 he was also a participant in the Washington, DC Peace Conference , which sought in vain to prevent the Civil War.

Skirmish during the second battle for Corinth

After the beginning of the Civil War, he began his military service and was Colonel in command of the 16th  Indiana Regiment , before he was used in Virginia under the command of General Nathaniel Prentiss Banks after the first battle at Bull Run in July 1861 .

On April 28, 1862 he was promoted to brigadier general and then in June 1862 he was posted to the staff of General Ulysses S. Grant on the southwestern front. In the following years he only took part in the battle of Iuka on September 19, 1862, before he fell on the second day of the second battle for Corinth .
