Plectranthus barbatus is a species of harp bushes ( Plectranthus ) in the mint family (Lamiaceae).

description

Plectranthus barbatus grows as a subshrub . The opposite leaves are relatively large with a serrated edge. There are purple-blue flowers on upright, racemose inflorescences up to 25 centimeters long .

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 28.

distribution

The distribution area of Plectranthus barbatus extends from tropical Africa over the Arabian Peninsula to India and China.

Systematics

It was first described in 1810 by the English botanist Henry Charles Andrews in The Botanist's Repository for New, and Rare Plants , Volume 10, Plate 594. A synonym for Plectranthus barbatus Andrews is, for example, Coleus barbatus (Andrews) Benth.

The species Plectranthus barbatus contains about two varieties:

  • Plectranthus barbatus Andrews var. Barbatus : It occurs from Eritrea to northern Tanzania, on the Arabian Peninsula and from the Indian subcontinent to China.
  • Plectranthus barbatus var. Grandis (LHCramer) Lukhoba & AJPaton : It occurs from northeastern and eastern tropical Africa to Zaire.

Plectranthus barbatus is the only significant source of forskolin , a toxic diterpene . Forskolin is used in biochemistry and pharmacology for the unspecific activation of adenylate cyclases .
