Pnina Navè-Levinson

P (e) nina Navè-Levinson ( Hebrew פנינה נוה לוינסון; * April 3, 1921 in Berlin ; † August 3, 1998 in Jerusalem ) was an Israeli Judaist and author of several books.

The Navè family, influenced by Zionists, had to leave Germany in 1935 and emigrated to Palestine. Pnina Navè studied Romance Studies , Jewish Studies and Education ; in 1952 she was the first woman to receive her PhD from the Faculty of Jewish Studies at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem . She was a co-founder of the first liberal synagogue in Jerusalem ( Har-El-Synagoge ), long-time employee of the Encyclopaedia Hebraica and translator of Romance literature into Hebrew. At the end of the 1960s she returned to Germany, where she held lectureships at the University of Heidelberg and the Heidelberg University of Education , where she has been an honorary professor since 1986 .

Pnina Navè-Levinson was involved in the Jewish-Christian dialogue on various levels . She was close to liberal Judaism . Her research interest was particularly the role of women in Judaism.

Pnina Navè-Levinson was married to the national rabbi Nathan Peter Levinson .
