Maurice Podoloff
Maurice Podoloff (born August 18, 1890 in Jelisavetgrad , Russian Empire , † November 24, 1985 in New Haven , Connecticut ) was an American lawyer and sports manager. After he left high school in 1909, he moved to Yale , where he graduated from law school in 1915. From 1938 to 1952 he was President of the American Hockey League (AHL) and played a key role in the successful establishment of new franchises and the expansion of the league. Podoloff was one of the founding fathers of the National Basketball Association (NBA) and the predecessor league Basketball Association of America (BAA). Between 1949 and 1963 he was the first president of the NBA. In 1954 he directed the public's interest to the still young league by perfecting the first television contract.
The trophy for the title of MVP is named after him today . On April 25, 1974, Podoloff was inducted into the Naismith Hall of Fame of basketball . In January 2011, Podoloff was inducted into the AHL Hall of Fame .
