Polisflyget (German: Police Aviation) is the Swedish police air service. This police department has existed since 1964 in the form of a helicopter squadron, stationed at five locations, from Malmö in the south to Boden in the north.

history

The Police Aviation Service was established in 1964 with the hiring of a Bell 47 G-2A from Osterman Helicopter. The first pilot was Gert Skogsberg. In 1966, the squadron put its first own helicopter into operation, a Bell 47 G-4 . In June 1967 the first six officers successfully graduated from the Swedish Army's helicopter flight school in Boden . In July of the same year, the police received their first Augusta-Bell 206A . In 2001, the last Bell 47 G-4 was retired and moved to the Police Museum . The same applies to the first of a total of seven Eurocopter EC135 P2s ordered . The machine was destroyed in a fire in Tullinge / Stockholm in February 2002. The last Bell 206L helicopter was sold in June 2003.

In 2015, the police decided to purchase three to four drones as a supplement to the police flight service; in 2017 they only owned two of them.

tasks

The tasks of the helicopter squadron include supporting other police units:

  • to search for criminals or escaped prisoners.
  • to search for missing persons from the air.
  • Air surveillance of game hunting and tracking of emissions of environmentally hazardous substances.
  • Air surveillance during demonstrations and state visits.
  • Small-scale transportation of national armed forces , bomb disposal devices and other police units and equipment
  • Passenger transport - the police lack larger transport helicopters, for example to transport the National Response Force or personnel and equipment for bomb protection. According to the 2006 Law on the Armed Forces Combating Terrorism, armed forces personnel have the same powers as police officers in assisting the police. Since 2014, helicopter support has been guaranteed by Black Hawk military helicopters , which are available at Malmens Airport in Linköping to support the police in serious crimes or suspected terrorist attacks. This is partly a result of the evaluations of the terrorist attacks in Norway in 2011, when the police had difficulty reaching the island of Utøya as quickly as possible.

Stations

Police helicopter of the current type Bell 429 .

The police squadron is spread over five locations in Sweden.

place Base Helicopter type number
ground Ground helicopter flygplats Bell 429 1
Gothenburg Säve flygplats Bell 429 2
Stockholm Arlanda flygplats Bell 429 2
Malmo Malmo Airport Bell 429 1
Ostersund Åre Östersund Airport Bell 429 1
  • Stockholm: The squadron was stationed in Osterman's hangar at Bromma Airport from the beginning of 1964. More than ten years later, Ostermans and the flight squadron moved to Stockholm-Barkarby Airport, where the hangars of the former staff department were taken over. The next move took place in 1998 to Hangar 81 at Tullinge Airport. This hangar, named H81 , was used by Air Force aviators until 1986 and actually consisted of two separate hangars that were built together with an office building. The police moved into the southern part of the building. On the night of February 7, 2002, a fire broke out in the hangar. When the fire brigade arrived, the southern part had collapsed completely. In the fire, in addition to the recently delivered Eurocopter EC 135 P2, two of the older Bell 206 Jet Ranger and a private Cessna 172 were completely destroyed. In October 2006 the station moved to Myttinge on Värmdö, as a rescue airfield was set up as an evacuation base in Mölnvik. After the helicopter robbery at Västberga in 2009, the Myttinge site was called into question. Since the station was temporarily stationed at Stockholm / Arlanda Airport, it was decided in 2012 that the Stockholm location should remain in Arlanda permanently .
  • Gothenburg: At the foot of Säve Airport in Gothenburg is also the Police Aviation School, which has its own Bell 206B JetRanger II .

Accidents

There have been three aircraft accidents since 1965, resulting in a total of three fatalities. The first accident occurred in 1965, the second in 1980, and the third in April 2007, during tactical training with an EC135 at the Sisjön target range, south of Gothenburg.

Fleet change 2014

  • Seven Bell 429 machines were ordered in 2014 and delivered in 2015/16.
  • In 2018 the police decided to buy two more helicopters, the first in the Police Region South and the second in connection with the National Response Force in Stockholm. The helicopter type has not yet been determined.
