Segregated Alabama in the 1950s: An orphan Polly Whittier is a descendant of the founding family of a small southern town called Harrington. The city is separated by a ravine, and the bridge over it has been broken and inaccessible for many years. There is a climate of mistrust in the city until Polly manages to convince people to look at the good side of life and finally to dispel the prejudices. The situation in the village improves, but then Polly falls from a tree and suffers a back injury.

Awards
The film was nominated for two Emmy Awards in 1990 for Outstanding Cinematography for a Miniseries or a Special for Isidore Mankofsky and Outstanding Achievement in Choreography for Debbie Allen. Keshia Knight Pulliam and Brandon Quintin Adams were nominated for the Young Artist Award .
