Polydora ciliata is a worm from the family of Spionidae within the class of polychaete (Polychaeta).

features

The yellowish brown or light yellow, at the end of the body darker ringworm reaches a body length of up to 30 mm and a width of 7 to 10 mm. The body consists of up to 180 segments. Dorsally, the species bears gills from the 7th segment , only the last 10 to 20 segments are without gills. The enlarged 5th segment has 6 to 7 particularly long, laterally toothed bristles. With the help of the bristles of the 5th segment, Polydora ciliata digs tubes in limestone, calcareous algae sediment ( Lithothamnia ) stones, clay soil or in old mussel shells. It also inhabits wood or laminaria adhesive organs. The worm can also be found in brackish water .

Taxonomy

Polydora ciliata was scientifically described for the first time in 1838 by George Johnston as Leucodore ciliatus in the Magazine of Zoology and Botany, Edinburgh .
