geography
Polz is located on the Löcknitz River . Neighboring places are Dömitz with its district Klein Schmölen to the west and Breetz to the south-east. Breetz is a district of Lenzen (Elbe) in the state of Brandenburg . From Klein Schmölen, an inland dune extends over seven kilometers to the north, parallel to the Löcknitz, in an easterly direction. The highest point of the dune is 41 m above sea level. NN at Klein Schmölen. At the eastern end of the dune, Polz is 18 m above sea level. NN. Polz is framed on three sides by extensive pine forests, only to the south the place is bordered by the banks of the Löcknitz and the meadows behind it.
history
The place name Polz comes from the Slavic and probably means "place of the Polk". In 1438 the place name was Poltze , in 1550 Boltze . There is also the name Politz . The place is mentioned for the first time in 1424, but there are traces of settlement from around 3000 BC. Polz is a so-called Winkelzeilendorf . These villages were arranged eccentrically to the corridor. Due to the border location with the state of Brandenburg, there were frequent border disputes between the offices of Dömitz and Eldenburg until the 16th century .
In 1873/74 Polz was connected to the Wittenberge – Lüneburg railway line , and a train station and a passing point were built. The railway line was dismantled in 1947 as part of the reparation payment to the Soviet Union and not renewed.
After 1961 Polz was included in the restricted area on the inner-German border with many restrictions against the residents. These regulations were only relaxed with the extensive expansion of the border fortifications in the 1970s.
Polz belonged to the Ludwigslust district (until 1934 Mecklenburg-Schwerin , until 1952 Land Mecklenburg , until 1990 District Schwerin , since 1990 Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania ). Since the district reform in 2011 , Polz has been in the newly formed district of Ludwigslust-Parchim .
Polz was incorporated into Dömitz on June 13, 2004.
Attractions
On the Mühlenberg, an inland dune , there is an Erdholländer windmill from 1887. It fell into disrepair after operations were closed and was expanded into a restaurant in 1987, where the mill character was lost by installing a viewing platform instead of a cap with mill wings. After the fall of the Wall , the mill was closed. It was renovated in 2000 and is now used as an apartment.
Six Low German hall houses as former stable houses of the rural population in Friedenstraße 7 and 8 and Wasserstraße 2, 3, 4 and 8 are under monument protection: see the list of architectural monuments in Dömitz .
Sports
Polz is known for his sports club SV Blau Weiß Polz , which has existed since 1921 and whose first soccer team has been playing in the west of the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern regional league since the 2010/11 season . A significant event for such a small town was a football match between Hungary and Georgia during the U-16 European Football Championship in 1997 . This group game took place on April 28, 1997 on the field of SV Blau Weiß Polz.
