Poncho Sanchez (born October 30, 1951 in Laredo , Texas ) is an American Latin jazz musician, salsa singer, orchestra leader and conga player ( Conguero ). His ensemble won the Best Latin Jazz Album for Latin Soul award at the 2000 Grammy Awards (published by Concord Picante ).

Sanchez performed with many jazz greats like Cal Tjader , Mongo Santamaría , Hugh Masekela , Clare Fischer and Tower of Power . He is considered an important percussionist in America.

Sanchez is the youngest of seven children and grew up in Norwalk, California . He first learned to play the guitar and later got into singing . Furthermore, he taught himself to play the flute , percussion and timbale . The congas were the main instrument in his youth.

In 1975, at the age of 23, he was invited by vibraphonist Cal Tjader to play in his band. Sanchez played in the band until 1982 as Conguero .
