The Pont d'Argenteuil is a road bridge over the Seine , the Argenteuil ( Département Val-d'Oise ) on its right bank with a strip of banks belonging to the municipality of Gennevilliers ( Département Hauts-de-Seine ) and the area of the municipality of Colombes in the background Connects northwest of Paris .

It stands about 500 m below the Argenteuil railway bridge ; the next bridge downstream is the Pont-Aqueduc de Colombes, just under 1.3 km away .

description

Today's Pont d'Argenteuil is a four-lane road bridge with wide sidewalks that crosses the Seine and, with an immediately adjoining bridge structure, also the four-lane Quai de Bezons that follows its right bank, before it leads into Avenue Gabriel-Péri . The decoration of the bridge railings with a row of flower boxes and occasionally the sidewalks with small trees in planters is eye-catching .

The Pont d'Argenteuil crosses the Seine with three arches that have spans of around 62 + 68 + 62 m. The bridge is 203 m long and 19 m wide between the abutments , including the abutments and piers, the length is 232 m. Its two-hinged arches between the stone pillars that extend upwards are each formed by six riveted, curved steel girders that are stiffened by diagonal and transverse connections. The carriageway slab is mounted on the girders with slender supports which - unlike the similarly looking Pont d'Asnières - are not further decorated and allow a view into the interior of the structure.

history

Wooden arch bridge (1833)

At Argenteuil there has been a ferry connection across the Seine for a long time . In 1830 it was decided to build a wooden arch bridge with stone pillars. In 1831, following the relevant tender , a royal decree approved the award to the entrepreneur Rozier des Bordes as part of a 99-year concession , after which he built the bridge according to plans by Henri Navier (and a connecting road to Sannois to connect with the Paris - Le Havre road ) had to build within three years at their own expense and to maintain and repair for 99 years and was given the right to collect a toll regulated according to the amount in the concession . Rozier des Bordes, who had already built the Pont d'Asnières on the basis of a similar concession, later incorporated both bridges into a public company.

This bridge was destroyed in the Franco-Prussian War in 1870 . First, the city of Argenteuil had a wooden temporary structure built, which Alfred Sisley depicted on one of his works.

Cast iron arch bridge (1874)

Instead of the wooden superstructure, the rebuilt bridge now had seven cast-iron arches and a toll booth clearly towering over the bridge.

This bridge was partially painted several times by Claude Monet , Auguste Renoir and Gustave Caillebotte .

In 1940, during World War II , the Pont d'Argenteuil was destroyed.

Steel Arch Bridge (1947)

In 1947 a new bridge - the current one - was built in a style based on the Pont d'Asnières.
