The Pont de l'Île Saint-Denis is a road bridge in the north of Paris that leads from Saint-Denis over the right arm of the Seine called grand bras to the Île Saint-Denis in the Seine-Saint-Denis department . Under the same name, a second, somewhat shorter bridge connects the Île-Saint-Denis over the left arm of the river with Villeneuve-la-Garenne in the Hauts-de-Seine department .

history

The first plans for a bridge were made in 1829, but it was not until 1843 that the Marc Seguin brothers received a 60-year concession to cross the Seine with a suspension bridge each and to collect tolls for it. The two bridges were opened to traffic as early as August 1844. One of these was painted by Alfred Sisley in 1872 . In 1886 the bridges were taken over by the municipalities and the toll was lifted.

As early as 1874 there were calls for a new bridge after the condition of the ropes and damage from the Franco-Prussian War gave cause for concern. As the years went by, increased traffic made the matter more pressing. However, it was not until 1901 that the final decision was made to build a new, considerably larger bridge that should be stable enough to accommodate a tram. This bridge was built between 1903 and 1905 according to the plans of the engineer Caldagues. The decoration of the bridge is by Jules Formigé, the figures by Florian Kulikowski.

description

The new bridge, 1905

The 118 m long bridge over the right arm of the Seine has three segment arches with spans of 30 + 44 + 30 m, which are supported on stone pillars and abutments. The bridge over the narrower left arm of the river is built in a similar way, but only 98 m long with spans of 30 + 33 + 30 m. Both bridges are around 14 m wide.

All arches consist of seven parallel arch supports. The outer arch supports are made of cast iron . Only four arch girders in the middle arch, which were damaged by a pusher boat during floods in 1983, have been replaced by steel girders.

Trams ran across the bridge as planned until they went out of fashion in the 1930s. When a new tram network was considered in the 1970s, it was initially planned to replace the old bridge with a new one. At the initiative of the population and the affected communities, the old bridge was finally renovated. The bridge deck was replaced by a prestressed concrete ceiling. The railings are now made of cast aluminum and stylistically based on the original railings. After four years of construction, line 1 of the Paris tram (T1) has been running over the bridge since November 2012 . This makes it an extremely rare example of a cast iron bridge used by a modern tram.
