Niyazi Güney (born April 26, 1974 in Trabzon ) is a former Turkish football player and coach.

Player career

Güney played in the junior division PTT Ankara and was accepted into the squad of the second division as an amateur player in the summer of 1993. By the end of the season, he completed a total of five competitive appearances for his team and then received a professional contract for the 1994/95 season. After Güney was also used in only a few games in the 1994/95 season, he won a regular place with the 1995/96 season.

In the summer of 1996 Güney moved to the southern Turkish first division club Gaziantepspor and played here for two and a half seasons before he was loaned to league rivals DÇ Karabükspor for the second half of the 1998/99 season . For the 1999/2000 season he was kept in the squad again and used in 14 competitive games. With his club he finished this season in 3rd place in the table and thus achieved the best first division placement in the club's history.

After Güney could not get beyond the reserve role at Gaziantepspor last, he was given in the summer of 2000 to the league rivals MKE Ankaragücü . At this club he met the progressive head coach Ersun Yanal and was used by this as a regular player from the start. Under this coach, the club reached sixth place in the table in the 2000/01 season and the best first division placement for twelve years. In the following season, the 2001/02 season , the previous year's performance was surpassed with 4th place in the table and thus repeated the best first division placement in the club's history.

After two successful seasons with Ankaragücü, Güney was signed by Beşiktaş Istanbul in the summer of 2002 . Here he could not conquer a regular place under the head coach Mircea Lucescu , but Güney was used by Lucescu in a total of 10 competitive games and scored two goals. As part of the team for the club's centenary, he became Turkish champion with them . In addition, his team reached the quarter-finals of the UEFA Cup this season and thus achieved the best club placement in the European Cup competitions.

At the end of the 2002/03 season he left the Beşiktaş again and moved to league rivals Konyaspor . After a season for Konyaspor, he moved on to his old club Ankaragücü. After he had completed five league games by the next winter break, he was given to the first division club Diyarbakırspor for the second half of the season . At the end of the season he returned to Ankaragücü and played here for one season.

After he had worked for the second and third division clubs Mardinspor , Uşakspor and Pendikspor until the spring of 2009 , he ended his playing career.
