Ponta Delgada is a municipality ( freguesia ) on the north coast of the Portuguese island of Madeira , in the district ( concelho ) of São Vicente . The community has an area of ​​9.4 km² and 1,359 inhabitants (as of June 30, 2011).

history

After João Gonçalves Zarco rediscovered Madeira Island, the Portuguese began to settle the island for the first time in 1419 . In 1552 Ponta Delgada was raised to an independent municipality.

Literary references

The writer, poet and journalist Horácio Bento de Gouveia (1901–1983) was born here. In the house where he was born, the Casa Museu Horácio Bento de Gouveia is a museum dedicated to him.

The writer Agustina Bessa-Luís (1922–2019) wrote the novel A Corte do Norte (German: The stately court of the north), which is set here. It was successfully filmed in 2009 by João Botelho .
